The Mistakes I Often See with Breech Positioning (and What to Do Instead)

Hearing that your baby is in a breech position can feel overwhelming, but the good news is there’s often plenty you can do to encourage your little one to turn. At Dynamic Chiropractic, we see many families facing this challenge, and over the years I've noticed some common mistakes that can make a big difference — especially if caught early. Here are some key things to keep in mind to give your baby the best chance to move into an optimal position.
1. Waiting Too Long to Take Action on Breech Positioning
One of the biggest mistakes I see is parents being told their baby is breech too late — often after 36 weeks — when space is already limited. Ideally, if you’re told your baby is breech around 32–33 weeks, this gives you valuable time to take proactive steps. While some babies will turn naturally, waiting without doing anything reduces your chances of success. Starting early means you can introduce gentle strategies like specific movements, positional changes, and professional care to create space and encourage your baby to move.

2. Overlooking Important Postural and Movement Changes
Your daily posture and activities can have a huge impact on your baby’s positioning — and this is where I see a lot of missed opportunities. For example, spending too much time reclining back on the couch, sticking with certain gym exercises like deep squats, or even lying flat on your back (even with a wedge) can reduce space in your pelvis and limit your baby’s ability to turn. Instead, try sitting with your hips above your knees, avoid deep squats in late pregnancy, and be mindful of movements that encourage better pelvic alignment. Small adjustments to your daily habits can make a huge difference.
3. Attempting Techniques Without Guidance
Techniques like Spinning Babies can be incredibly helpful, but many parents attempt these exercises without professional guidance — and this can sometimes do more harm than good. Movements like forward-leaning inversions are powerful, but only if done correctly. What you think you’re doing and what’s actually happening with your body can be quite different, and that’s why working with a trained professional is so important. We at Dynamic Chiropractic are trained in Spinning Babies and Optimal Maternal Positioning, and we’re here to guide you safely and effectively through these techniques to give you the best possible results.
If you've recently found out your baby is breech — don’t panic! Taking early steps, making ergonomic changes, and working with someone trained in pregnancy care can make a big difference. If you have questions or want support, we’re here to help you every step of the way.
